Australia Study Program

22 October - 4 November 2012

This year Australia Study Program will run during the period of 22 October - 4 November 2012.

Finance MPT753 is offered as a Study Program where students have the opportunity to study intensively at Deakin University, Melbourne Burwood Campus over a three day period and to visit firms in the CBD, before undertaking a series of industry visits in Tasmania.

The theme of the study program is; 'Investing in Australia's Future: Regionalism'. Students will become familiar with issues of regional sustainable development and gain an understanding of the implications this has for the growth of business in Australia.

Students will then undertake visits to government agencies and businesses in the forestry, eco-tourism, aquaculture, food and beverage and energy sectors.

These visits provide an opportunity to work with business/government managers to identify investment opportunities. Projects will focus on creative investments that will attract interesting people that will contribute to sustainable economic growth. Furthermore, students gain a better understanding of government initiatives and subsidies that are available to create growth in regional Australia and to understand the meaning of regional sustainability from a business perspective.

Students will put into practice the fundamental valuation techniques developed during the intensive study period of the program. These will include forecasts of cash flows, the Internal Rate of Return, the estimated net present value and scenario and sensitivity analysis.

The team will produce a set of recommendations based on these estimates. These recommendations and estimates will form the basis of the consultancy report. The consultancy report is the primary source of assessment for the unit. Students will also be assessed on an individual reflective journal to be submitted post tour, and from assessment developed by the unit chair during the tour.

This innovative program of study provides students with a valuable 'networking' opportunity to work with business managers to develop commercially and environmentally viable solutions.

Places are strictly limited.
