Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

What is the DBA?

The DBA is designed to provide students with an advanced understanding of key business disciplines and research methodologies relevant to business. It also aims to develop critical thinking and the ability to apply theoretical understanding and research results to business problems. It will develop advanced research skills and the ability to communicate research outcomes, improve professional practice in a range of business disciplines and provide students with the opportunity to pursue individual research projects.

The Deakin DBA

The Deakin DBA offers flexibility with units available on our Melbourne Burwood Campus and off campus. As a DBA candidate you will be guided by expert supervisors from the Deakin Graduate School of Business and the Faculty of Business and Law as you design and conduct your research and write your thesis.

You will be supported by Deakin University's extensive online facilities and support services and enjoy flexibility and quality in your DBA study experience.

Course Structure

The DBA is a coursework doctoral program consisting of the following units of study:
Stage 1 - 8 coursework units in business administration.
Stage 2 - 4 coursework units in research methods.
Stage 3 - 12 credit points of research. This can be undertaken full-time or part-time.

Course details for the DBA

Admission Requirements

  • At least five years of management (or equivalent professional) experience
  • Four years of undergraduate study or a masters degree
  • Evidence of research experience and capability equivalent to an honours or masters degree minor thesis (15,000 words). Work-based research and/or publications may be considered
  • Evidence of English language ability equivalent to an IELTS score of 7.0 overall with no band score lower than 6.5

All applicants are advised to contact the DBA program director- Professor Tanya Castleman prior to submitting a formal application to discuss their eligibility and possible research project. The program director will advise if a suitable supervisor can be found in the relevant discipline.

Domestic students should send their application directly to the Deakin Graduate School of Business.

International students must apply through Deakin International. The application form for international students can be obtained from Deakin International.

Application dates

Applications must be received to the Deakin Graduate School of Business by:

  • 15 November for Trimester 1
  • 15 May for Trimester 2
  • 15 September for Trimester 3

Fees

Fees are paid on a credit point basis. This applies to thesis enrolment as well as to coursework units More information regarding fees.
