Marianne Carter, MBA (International)

Postgraduate Internship completed Trimester 1 2012

Aim: To undertake a Postgraduate Internship in Marketing

As part of my MBA (International) studies, I was interested in doing the Internship unit as I thought it would be a great opportunity to put into practice what I had learned and to narrow down the areas of marketing that I was interested in working in. I was offered a position at Myer, Australia's largest retailer, in the Events and PR Department.

The internship was structured as a 12-week program where I was partnered with a very experienced mentor. The first few weeks were spent getting an understanding of the interaction between events, PR, sponsorship and local area marketing. I was fortunate enough to be able to assist in several major events, the biggest of which was the 25 year club, an event celebrating employees who have more than 25 years of service with the organisation.

There were many benefits to be gained by undertaking this unit. I had the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of events and PR activities, which I would not have been exposed to had I not worked with such a large organisation. Most department heads were more than happy to advise me on the direction that I could take after completing the MBA. On completion of the internship, I was lucky enough to be offered a position at Myer.

I would like to think that my studies at Deakin taught me well and I would highly encourage MBA students to pursue the Internship, Practicum and Audacious Leadership units. These units challenge you and force you to think and act outside the box. The wealth of experience that this exposure gives you cannot be gained from just classroom lectures.
