MPI700 Postgraduate Internship

Teaching method

This is an experiential learning unit and requires no class contact. Students will attend the host organisation for the equivalent of one day a week to perform the negotiated internship duties assigned to them. Students will be progressively in contact with the Unit Chair and the academic mentor appointed to them for assistance.

The unit is available to students registered as on or off campus.

Supervision

  • Initial interview by the Unit Chair or Unit Team to determine suitability of the student, proposed internship provider and relevance of proposed internship.  This must be done in person.
  • Briefing by the Unit Chair about assessment requirements and their relation to the internship experience.
  • Allocation of an individual teaching staff mentor for each student.
  • Liaison with the student and host organisation during the internship.  This may include site visits where appropriate.

Duration

  • Each Postgraduate Internship unit comprises 96 hours of contact time.  This is notionally based on an 8 hour per week commitment for the duration of a standard 12 week teaching trimester (12 weeks x 8 hour day x 1 Days = 96 hours).

Support

  • Deakin Studies Online (DSO) is the University’s Online Teaching and Learning environment and will be used extensively within this unit for:
    • Delivery of course materials (Unit Guide and Assignment Cover Sheets, etc)
    • Academic assessment and feedback
    • Assignment submission backup.
    • Administrative purposes (communication with enrolled students)
  • The unit website (www.deakin.edu.au/gsb/internship) is also available as an information resource and alternative means of delivering support materials for students operating in non-standard timeframes.
  • Access to the internet is required to meet the assessment requirements of the unit.

Important Note:  All communication will be via the student’s Deakin University email account. This can be set up to be automatically forwarded to any external email account, such as yahoo or hotmail, if preferred (see ITS email information for details on how to do this).

Deakin University acknowledges the traditional land owners of present campus sites.
