Student storiesPostgraduate Internship completed Trimester 2 2012
My postgraduate internship at SBS Radio News has been an extremely beneficial part of my Masters at Deakin University. I had the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of a journalist's role and the nature of a radio newsroom. I thoroughly enjoyed the work and appreciated the challenge of the tasks I was assigned.
The internship at SBS Radio News was structured as a 12-week program, two-days per week. I worked 8-hour shifts under the supervision of the Deputy Executive Producer of SBS Radio News.
My work involved recording interviews with guests in relation to a news topic, audio and script editing to create a news piece that was either assigned to the radio newsreader to broadcast and/or submitted to the SBS Radio online website as a combination of written and audio files that I read and recorded.
I feel privileged to have interviewed some inspirational personalities including the CEO of Oxfam Australia, a representative from the Law Council of Australia, a spokesman for the President of Afghanistan, an Afghan Olympian, an Afghan Idol winner, the coach of Afghanistan's National Cricket team and others.
I saw my work broadcast on the SBS Radio News online podcasts, news bulletins, social media sites and aired on the Dari language radio program.
I am honoured to be offered an ongoing position as a result of my internship with SBS Radio News, fulfilling my career objective to be a journalist.
The professional experience I gained during my internship gave me the ability to apply theory to workplace, personal and career advancement and assisted me to achieve a long-term career objective.
I would advise all students to participate in an internship through Deakin University. It helped me convert academic knowledge into industry and career decision-making skills. And there's the potential of the internship translating into a job.
