The Apprentice @ Deakin

One thousand dollars was up for grabs at The Apprentice @ Deakin - a business competition for Year 10 students, styled on the successful TV show of the same name.

The events were held at Deakin University's Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus on 19 September, and Melbourne Burwood Campus on 22 September.

The students participated with a sense of competition and passion for the project and left with a sense of achievement and pride - displaying greater knowledge, ideas and leadership capabilities.

In just three hours teams were required to create a business plan to set up a social media site, 'SCOOLSPACE'.

With a budget of $250,000, teams were required to prepare budgeted cash flow statements, create a secure online space, meet all legal requirements, create a marketing campaign, select staff and provide examples of how partnerships could be formed to assist with future viability.

Students were taught the basics of finance and accounting, information systems, law, and marketing and management. From this instruction, they devised a business plan and presentation.

Each student was required to present an element of the plan to an audience of fellow students, teachers and the assessment panel. Up for grabs was a $1000 prize and commemorative plaque.

The assessment panel, of academic staff from the Faculty of Business and Law, looked at the quality of the plans, participation at the presentation, the creativity of the ideas, and viability of the business plan.

Congratulations to the winners on the days - Grovedale College (Geelong) and Carwatha College (Melbourne).

These events would not have been possible without the assistance of staff and students from the Faculty of Business and Law.

The time they volunteered in terms of planning, administration, lectures and support, ensured the two days were a great success.
