Deakin Alumni Law ChapterChapter launch 2010

2010 Re-launch of the Law Alumni Chapter

After navigating the paved footpath of Federation Square with a vague sense of direction, we wound our way up and down stairwells to the waterfront venue, ZINC. The brisk walk and humid weather lent itself to an evening of social networking, whilst enjoying a cold beverage to quench our thirst.

The venue catered to a mixed crowed, with a large proportion of the 145 attendees being Gen Y’s, embarking on the first years of their professional careers. There was a constant hum across the room as guests engaged in lively conversation before enjoying the formalities of the evening.

The purpose of the gathering was to re-launched the Chapter in anticipation of the 20 year anniversary celebrations ear-marked for 2011 and announce the first Patron of the Law Alumni Chapter, the founding Head of the School of Law and current Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Clarke. This event also offered and opportunity for colleagues to farewell Professor Clarke on his retirement from Deakin University.

The current Head of School, Professor Anne Rees began the formal proceedings, followed by the Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning), Dr Claire Macken, who spoke warmly about Professor Clarke. Professor Clarke then gave an engaging speech with a ‘tongue in cheek’ hint that we could all assist his Patronly duties, by contributing financially to the Alumni which, in turn, would assist him to improve his status as a wealthy benefactor.

This event was highly enjoyable and successful. With its new Patron and the commitment from 30 guests to join the Alumni Committee, we look forward to seeing what will happen in 2011, the 20 year anniversary of the School of Law. Stay tuned for details of upcoming events.
