Adjunct Professor Hon Michael Kirby visits School of Law

Adjunct Professor Hon Michael Kirby visited the Burwood Campus on 16 May, 2011. Students and staff from the School of Law took advantage of the opportunity to ask Professor Kirby about his broad range of experiences in a question and answer session. Topics discussed included:

  • the research interests of judges
  • the process for the selection of judges
  • the importance of human rights
  • the significance of statutory interpretation
  • the requirements for clarity in writing
  • reminiscences about his time on the High Court and as President of the NSW Court Of Appeal.

Ravi Arora, School of Law student said: "I felt very honoured and privileged to have the opportunity to attend the Q & A Professor Kirby. He showed me the importance of keeping an open mind to the development of law, particularly in relation to international issues."

Hannah Stevens was equally inspired by this session. She said "The Q & A with Professor Kirby was a wonderful and unique experience. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the judgements he delivered during his time on the High Court and the current legal issues facing the Australian judiciary."

The Q & A session with Professor Kirby was truly engaging, educational and inspiring for those in attendance.
