Harwood Andrews Lawyers offers two internship placements (one in Geelong and one in Melbourne) for a period of two years, working one day a week. Deakin law student Sarah Murray was an intern in 2010-2011. The interns rotate their time between the firm's two biggest departments, business law and dispute resolution. There is also plenty of opportunity to gain experience in the firm's other practice areas such as family law, wills and estates and property law.
As Sarah nears the end of her internship, she spent some time looking back over her time with Harwood Andrews.
As an intern I received a wide variety of tasks. For example, I have been involved in writing legislation updates, visiting PILCH - the homeless persons legal clinic, undertaking lots of research, preparing documents for discovery, drafting letters to clients, and compiling summaries about recent changes in the law.
I was constantly exposed to different areas of law which meant I was always learning new things. There are also a number of social events to get involved in such as the Harwood Andrews Corporate Triathlon.
From undertaking the internship program I have been able to experience what it is like working in a leading law firm. I have now had the benefit of seeing the practical side to the law which is something that can't be taught, however was able to put into practice the knowledge of the law that I have gained at University.
Furthermore, I have had the privilege of working with a variety of lawyers of all ages and experience. These are the people that have really contributed to my experience as an intern at Harwood Andrews, to my legal education and training in general.
I would highly recommend the Harwood Andrews Internship. It is a great opportunity to gain practical legal experience, work with those in the legal profession and build on your legal skills in general.
Applications for the 2012 Harwood Andrews Internships are now open.
