Immersing in culture adds to learning experience

'International experience provides a greater advantage in the job market...'

Simon Norton embarked on China early this year as part of the Chinese study tour with 44 other students. As well as great holiday pics and souveniers for family and friends, Simon brought back so much more from this 2 weeks study tour to Shanghai....

The rise of China and the 'Asian century', along with its implications for Australia, is well recognised. As the government's recent Asian Century White Paper notes, the "Asian century is an Australian opportunity". But it is also a great opportunity for individuals.

As western companies increasingly expand into China, workers who are China literate will have a great advantage in the job market with their skills becoming much sought after.

As an employee of an ASX listed company with an office in China, the Chinese Commercial Law unit combined with the China Study Tour have been immensely beneficial in my own career. Soon after returning from the 2012 study tour to Shanghai I have applied my new found knowledge of Chinese commercial law in analysing my company's legal obligations in China. This program has been of great practical benefit in my own career development and opened up new opportunities.

The tour to China has many benefits to students. China's legal system, culture, and political system is vastly different to Australia's. These differences can be read about in text books, but they are best understood by visiting the country and gaining insights from lawyers, academics and students based in China. The insights gained from talking to local practitioners on professional visits to Chinese legal firms, law courts, the Shanghai Stock Exchange and local law lecturers is invaluable.

Also a highlight is the chance to immerse yourself in Chinese culture, food, and language, to meet locals, visit famous tourists sites and travel within the country.

As an off campus student it was also great to develop new friendships and network with people from both Deakin University and our wonderful hosts at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. I highly recommend the China Study Tour to all Deakin law students as well as students from other faculties who have an interest in China.
