How to Apply 
School Leavers
Year 12 students must apply through Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC). Entry is based on the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) score achieved. For further information contact VTAC on 1300 364 133 or visit VTAC.
Non-School Leavers
Within the non-school leaver category, there are four sub-categories. All applicants in the non-school leaver category must also apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC). Applicants may purchase a copy of VTAC Guide (available from newsagencies). The Guide contains the application form and other relevant information. Alternatively, applications can be made online at VTAC.
Sub category 1
Applicants who have undertaken any study (complete or incomplete) at a degree level at an Australian University within the last 10 years.
Applicants in this sub category are required to undertake the Deakin University Law School Admission Test (ALSET). Selection is based on a combination of the ALSET result and results achieved in tertiary studies (at a degree level or above) undertaken within the last 10 years.
Tertiary results are converted to a Grade Point Average (GPA) and carry 60 percent weighting. The ALSET result carries 40 percent weighting. Please note, tertiary results must be from an Australian University. Results obtained from overseas Universities or TAFE will not be converted into a GPA, but will be considered. Applicants in this sub category are assessed separately from School leavers.
Sub category 2
Applicants who have not attempted any tertiary study and are not school leavers.
Applicants in this sub category are required to undertake the Australian Law Schools Entrance Test (ALSET). Selection is based entirely on the ALSET result. No other criteria is considered. Applicants in this sub category are assessed separately from current School leavers.
Sub category 3
Applicants who are currently enrolled, or have been enrolled in 2009, 2010 or 2011, in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree and have completed the equivalent of one full-time year at an Australian University (including at least 2 law units).
Applicants in this sub category are exempt from undertaking the ALSET. Selection is based on results achieved as part of a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, at an Australian University. Results will be converted to a Grade Point Average (GPA). Applicants who achieve the top ranking GPA’s will be offered a place.
Sub category 4
An applicant who has successfully completed an Australian postgraduate qualification in law (3 out of 4 units must be law).
Applicants in this sub category are exempt from undertaking the ALSET. Selection is based on results achieved in tertiary studies (at a degree level or above) undertaken within the last ten years. Results will be converted to a Grade Point Average (GPA). Applicants who achieve the top ranking GPAs will be offered a place.
Alternate Entry
Deakin University students may apply for an internal course transfer into the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. To be eligible to make an application for an internal course transfer, applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree course at Deakin University and have completed at least eight credit points in that degree course.
Applicants must also have attained a minimum of a distinction average (70 percent and above) in order to be eligible to transfer into a law course. Students who have completed more than two-thirds of their current course are not eligible to make an application for an internal transfer.
Applicants must apply directly to the School of Law using a Course Transfer Application Form (available from the Law School Office at the Melbourne Burwood Campus or the Faculty campus office at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus or the Warrnambool Campus).
