Students are important
The success of our students is important to the Law
School. Every effort is made to make their time with us as rewarding and enjoyable
as possible. We
recognise that the transition from secondary school to university can be difficult
and that postgraduate study can be challenging when trying to balance the competing
demands of family and employment. The teaching and administrative components
of our programs seek to take account of these factors by offering courses in
a variety of modes, by being as flexible as possible in teaching and assessment
regimes and by responding to requests for assistance speedily.
Teaching is a priority
Within the School, teaching is our first priority. Law
School staff are committed to ensuring that our students are taught in the
best possible
manner and provided with all the facilities they need to further their education.
The methods used within the Law School, or the University generally, to cater
for the needs of its students include:
> Instructionally designed materials
> Library services
> Examination Centre network
> Study groups
> On-line learning - Deakin
Studies Online (DSO)
First year students attend three hours of lectures and one tutorial (one hour) per week for each Law unit they undertake. Later year students attend three hours of lectures per week for each Law unit they undertake. On-campus classes are scheduled between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.
Study groups
Undergraduate students are encouraged to study and learn cooperatively
by using their practical legal skills firms to firm working relationships amongst
themselves. This creates a school environment that is personal and cooperative
but which remains demanding and challenging in character.
Supportive administration
The Law School seeks to provide responsive administrative
support for students. Because of its size there is a flexible and friendly
interaction between students, academic and administrative staff which provides
students with easy access to course advice and guidance generally.
On-campus study at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood
All courses offered by the
school are available on the Melbourne Campus at Burwood (full-time or part-time).
Lectures, seminars and tutorials
conducted in these programs are held during the day with some running in the
early evening.
On-campus study at the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds
The LLB
degree is also available on the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds (full-time or
part-time). The on-campus lectures, seminars and
tutorials are held during the day. First year off-campus students
will also have the advantage of electronic tutorials via DSO.
On-campus study at the Warrnambool Campus
From 2007 the first two years of the LLB will be offered at the Warrnambool Campus. The on-campus lectures, seminars and tutorials are to be held during the day.
Classes
Classes are conducted over a Trimester. As far as possible,
the material to be covered in a unit will be taught evenly over that period
and
it is expected that new material will be covered throughout the duration of
the semester.
When structuring the classes for each unit, the Law School has taken account of the prescriptions for accreditation specified by the Council of Legal Education (COLE). This has determined the rate at which most of the compulsory units in the LLB degree are taught.
