Bowater medal 2007 The Bowater Medal is awarded each year to the School of Management and Marketing Graduate of the Year. Selection is made using a combination of students' academic records and interview.
This year the selection panel interviewed five outstanding students and awarded the medal to Detective Sergeant Stephen Evans. Stephen completed his Bachelor of Commerce with a major in management obtaining an outstanding result of 15 high distinctions, 6 distinctions and 3 credits.
Other key achievements during Stephen's course included:
Stephen commenced his commerce degree in 2001 after 16 years in the police force. Stephen said, 'I decided to embark on a degree encompassing management as I found this area of my work very rewarding and challenging. In the last ten years I have managed several police stations and units, of varying size and structure, and I found that my experience in these areas assisted me greatly when I tackled my management assignments and examinations. Management theory made sense to me.
Stephen is married with two children. He believes the support he received from his family, together with the teaching staff at Deakin University, was pivotal in enabling him to remain focused and committed to completing his studies.
Stephen believes the completion of the Bachelor of Commerce degree has significantly improved his prospects for advancement through the police force, and is committed to undertaking a Masters of Business Administration in 2008. With entry into the policy force moving towards a higher education model from 2008, his immediate goal is to integrate his academic qualifications and management experience with his teaching and policing experience to advance his career in the field of police education.
The medal was presented at a dinner on September 5 which was attended by members of the Bowater Trust and school staff.
