Sport Management

Undergraduate studies in Sport Management

Career opportunities in sport management have expanded considerably in the past ten years. Sports including Australian football, basketball, cricket, tennis and golf plus national and state sporting organisations all require professionally-framed people to work in them. In addition, there is a need for qualified people to manage facilities catering for sport at the local level through to those facilities hosting national and international competition.

Some of the courses which include studies in sport management:
  • Bachelor of Commerce - major sequence in Sport Management
In response to the demand for effective managers in Australian sport, Deakin has developed Australia's first sport management major within a Bachelor of Commerce. As well as gaining specialist sport management knowledge, you will be equipped with a broad business degree, providing a perfect platform to launch your career. The flexible structure enables you to combine your studies in Sport Management with other specialist areas, such as Marketing, Management or Accounting.
  • Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science/Bachelor of Commerce - major sequence in Sport Management
This combined degree provides students with additional professional preparation in a variety of exercise and sport sciences, opening up career opportunities in sport science, the fitness industry, community health, and education.
  • Bachelor of Sport Development
The specialist field of Sport Development is concerned with increasing participation in sport through the design of sport systems and pathways to attract, retain and nurture participants. Unlike the combined degree, this course includes a specific focus on coaching. The course develops skills and knowledge in:
    • Coaching
    • Sport science and understanding human performance
    • Sport management and business
