Student Mentor Program

Support for students by students

Why do I need a mentor?

The Student Mentor Programs are designed to support new students with their social and academic transition during their first trimester. Its aim is to provide a supportive environment where one mentor can share their experiences with up to three new students, on a weekly basis. Mentors are current Deakin students and are primarily there to:

  • interpret academic expectations,
  • create awareness of key concepts of time-management and independent learning
  • link students to support services in the Faculty and across the University
  • increase your levels of confidence in this new and dynamic environment.

Why should I become a mentor?

Participating in the program is a good way to gain valuable work experience and improve core skills like communication, time management, organization, team work and leadership. You will gain great satisfaction from supporting and guiding new students by sharing your personal knowledge and experiences.

Who can participate?

All Business and Law students on the Melbourne Burwood Campus can join this Student Mentor Program. There are separate programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students based at Geelong Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool campuses and off-campus students are invited to contact the Program Manager to discuss mentoring opportunities at their respective campuses.
