Sustainable Tourism Management program gets an official start

The Faculty of Business and Law had the honour of hosting Mr Peter Hall, Minister for Higher Education and Skills, at a joint Deakin University and The Gordon signing ceremony for the brand-new Sustainable Tourism Management program on Friday 23 September 2011.

Held at the Deakin Waterfront Campus, Professor Jane den Hollander, Vice-Chancellor, Mr Grant Sutherland, CEO of the Gordon and Professor Gael McDonald, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Business and Law and a host of other industry VIPs were in attendance.

"This is the first joint offering between two outstanding institutions and provides students with a unique opportunity to experience the benefits of vocational and higher education. It shows how we can work in partnership to serve our local communities, and provide flexible and innovative options in order to increase access and participation," said Professor McDonald.

"From those wanting to get into the tourism profession to seasoned tourism operators wanting to up-skill themselves, everyone can benefit from this Sustainable Tourism Management program."

"Growth prospects are bright for tourism. Despite global economic uncertainties and the strong dollar, there are still record numbers of short-term visitors to Australia from countries like China, where year-to-date arrivals in June 2011, grew by 24.1 percent."

"Many visitors are now conscious of environmental and cultural impacts on the local community, as a result of tourism. These visitors increasingly want to be assured that tourism practices in Victoria are of a global standard."
