Sustainable governance in small and medium enterprises (SMEs)

The Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) in partnership with the School of Accounting Economics and Finance and the Centre of Sustainability and Responsible Organisations (CSaRO) are hosting a conference on Sustainable Governance in Small and Medium Enterprises

The conference will be held on 14-15 October 2013 at
Deakin's Melbourne City Centre
Level 3, 550 Bourke Street
Melbourne, Australia.

The one-and-a-half day conference will provide an opportunity for participants to hear presentations from practitioners and fellow academic researchers on a number of pertinent topics related to SMEs, including how to achieve sustainable performance, regulator engagement with the small business sector, and sustainable management practices in Australian small firms.

Keynote speakers will include:

  • Professor Robert Blackburn, SME Centre Director at the University of Kingston, UK
  • Dr Warren Mundy, Australian Productivity Commissioner
  • Professor Beth Walker, Small and Medium Enterprise Research Centre at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia

In addition, a roundtable discussion Identifying topics for future research in SMEs will also be held on the first day of the conference.

International Symposium on CSR: Sustainability, Governance and Effective Outcomes

12-13 December 2013

The International Symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been has jointly organised by CSaRO and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University, Bangalore, India and will be held at the Amrita University campus in Bangalore.

This conference will provide an opportunity to work with senior managers and academics in the area of CSR and Sustainability on topics including the impact of the new Indian Companies' Bill 2013.

International Association for Business and Society Conference

The 25th Anniversary International Association for Business and Society (IABS) Conference is scheduled be held in Sydney, Australia, from 19-22 June 2014. Reclaiming the Societal Dimension: New Perspectives on Society and Business is the theme for the 2014 IABS conference with participants invited to consider the broader societal, normative and political objectives of business organisations.

Governance and Sustainable Development: Building Commerce and Communities

Conf-logoIn December 2012, a team of CSaRO researchers led by Professor Nava Subramaniam hosted an International Conference on Sustainable Development and Governance in partnership with the Amrita School of Business at Amrita University, India. The 3-day conference titled Sustainable Development and Governance: Building Commerce and Communities was held in Coimbatore, India at Amrita University on the 12 - 14th December, 2012. As part of the conference proceedings, delegates from Deakin University led a workshop on Corporate Social Reporting (Sustainability in Action). The conference was a huge success and was supported by numerous large Indian organisations including Tata, Infosys, Birla and SKF, as well as the non profit sector, UN Global Compact Network and research institutes such as TERI. News of the conference gained media releases in 7 different South Indian newspapers including the Hindu (national paper). The conference was also supported by high profile keynote speakers such as former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, environmentalist Dr. Vandana Shiva and Dr. Arunabha Ghosh CEO, Council on Energy, Environment and Water. Based on connections made at the conference, several CSaRO members are now actively pursuing joint research collaborations with TERI and Amrita University, UN Global compact and Ernst and Young Accounting Firm. Amrita University has also agreed to support the establishment of a Sustainability and Governance Research Hub which is currently in the planning process.
