PhD Support Grants

Purpose of the Grant
The PhD Support Grant is available to assist PhD candidates in Business and Law to fund items relating to their research candidature. Funds are normally granted to assist with data collection such as survey printing and postage costs, specialist software not available from Deakin Information Technology Services, and binding of the thesis.

Value of Grant
Over the period of candidature, up to a total of $2000 may be granted. More than one application may be considered during candidature, provided the total has not been exceeded.

Eligibility
All PhD candidates enrolled in the Faculty of Business and Law are eligible to apply.

Application Process
The supervisor(s) and the Associate Head of School (Research) must approve applications and may indicate this in an email.  Applications may be made at any time during candidature (and within three months of successful completion, for preparation of final library copies of the thesis).

Use the following headings in your application. Please keep to a maximum of two pages.

  • Name and Contact Details of Applicant
  • Name and Contact Details of Supervisor
  • Title of PhD project
  • Progress to date; such as a summary of completed chapters
  • Details of proposed expenditure and time line for the project.

Submission Dates
Applications may be lodged at any time and will be considered by the Associate Dean (Research).
Applicants need to identify in the subject line of the email the name of the scheme from which funding is sought and the name of the applicant, and attach the application document. The email application, and the approval of the supervisor and Associate Head of School (Reseach), should be directed to the Manager Research Administration (bronwyn.kelly@deakin.edu.au), at the Geelong campus, who will forward applications to the Associate Dean (Research) for consideration.

Reporting Process
All PhD Support Grant recipients are required to lodge an annual report, no later than 1 December in the year the grant is awarded, detailing all expenditure and outcomes of the funded research activity.  Grants must be fully expended by 30 November in the year awarded. Future applications for funding will not be considered where reports which are due, have not been submitted.

The Associate Heads of School (Research) and the Faculty Research Group convenors are available to assist with the preparation of applications.

Faculty Research Grants

Purpose of the Grant
Faculty Research Grants are available to staff to undertake research in business and law generally.

Priority will be given to applications which:

  • are clearly related to Faculty and/or School scholarly interests and fall within one or more of the Faculty Research Groups:
    • Governance Regulation and Performance
    • Marketing Management
    • National Security
    • Sport, Leisure and Society
    • Theoretical and Applied Economics
    • Work, Workers and Organisations
  • provide a viable and well justified plan, schedule and budget related to the outcomes
  • have been peer reviewed, including review by the appropriate Faculty Research Group Convenor, and include a statement to that effect.

Value of Grant
Funding is normally in the range of $2000 - $20,000. Recipients of Faculty Research Grants are required to seek approval from the Associate Dean (Research) for any deviation from the approved budget presented in the application

Eligibility
Academic staff members in the Faculty of Business and Law who are employed at a fraction of 0.5 or greater on a continuing basis are eligible to apply. Early Career Researchers are invited to identify themselves as such on the application. The definition of an Early Career Researcher (ECR) is that used by the ARC –

Early Career Researchers (ECR) are researchers who are within five years of the start of their research careers when they submit their applications. This normally means that you have been awarded a PhD or equivalent research doctorate within five years.

If your PhD was awarded more than five years ago, but your research career has been interrupted, you may apply to the ARC for a determination of your eligibility as an ECR. Research career interruptions could include non-research employment, misadventure, illness, or family and carer responsibilities.

Outcomes
Staff may apply for funding for a research semester where they can demonstrate a plan to substantially accelerate their research and/or publication in quality journals.

Staff undertaking a higher degree by research may apply for funding for a research semester to complete their degree.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate substantial progress towards completion, generally by submitting a working draft of the thesis.

Faculty Research Grants will be expected to achieve the successful administrative and academic completion of a funded research project, a higher degree by research, research publications and presentations and where appropriate research applications for an Australian Research Council or other competitive grant scheme.

Schools may be required to refund the amount of a grant if the specified outcomes of the funded research activity are not achieved.

Application Process
Applications are to be made using the FRG application form (127KB).

In addition to a signed copy of the application, an electronic copy must be lodged with the Manager, Research Administration (email to: bronwyn.kelly@deakin.edu.au).

You are strongly advised to read the current Deakin How to Apply for Discovery Projects document on 'Preparing the Application' before completing the FRG application form, which is similar to the ARC form. This is available at the Research Services Division website.

Applications will be assessed by anonymous expert and non-expert reviewers and the reviewer reports and applications will be considered by the Faculty Research Committee. Reviewers are asked to score and/or comment on the following criteria:

Outside Studies Program

Note: A new OSP Policy and Procedure came into effect on 1 January 2007 and is available on The Guide. For queries regarding OSP approved for 2007, contact the Manager, Research (email: bronwyn.kelly@deakin.edu.au)

Purpose of the Grant
The purpose of the OSP as defined by Deakin University is to provide an academic staff member with an opportunity to work in a sustained manner with scholars, researchers and professionals outside Deakin University on a program which will be of value to the University and the staff member. Participation in an OSP is not an entitlement. It is based on the appropriateness of the proposed program, the needs of the school, faculty and University, the demonstrated capacity of the staff member to make effective use of the opportunity and the availability of resources.

Value of Grant
The maximum level of OSP grants, both within and outside Australia, is determined from time to time by the Vice-Chancellor on the advice of the University OSP Committee.

Submission dates
OSP applications are invited twice yearly:
* by the end of March for OSP to be taken in the first half of the subsequent year.
* by the end of September for OSP to be taken in the second half of the subsequent year.

Application Process
Applications for OSPs are submitted on the appropriate form to the faculty OSP Committee, via the relevant head of school.

Reporting
Reporting requirements for OSP taken from 2008 are specified in the OSP Procedure on The Guide.

For staff who participated in OSP before 2008, a detailed report on the OSP and outcomes, including publications, impending publications and other relevant outcomes, is required within two months of the conclusion of the OSP. The report is to be submitted through the Head of School, to the Manager Research Administration, for consideration by the Faculty Research Committee.
