Metabolic and musculoskeletal medicine research

Our research aims to understand the normal control and regulation of metabolism and its perturbation in complex metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. We also research the molecular, cellular and extracellular drivers of skeletal muscle metabolism, development and regeneration.

A unique aspect of our research is our ongoing collaboration with medicinal chemists to design and synthesise small molecule compounds to target promising candidate proteins implicated in the metabolic disease state, as both research tools and to inform future therapeutics.

Our research areas

Our research explores novel approaches to ameliorate whole-body metabolic disorders and skeletal muscle specific disease states. The collective research programs utilise novel therapeutic compounds alongside mouse models of metabolic and skeletal muscle diseases.

Some of these novel approaches include in vivo AAV delivery to generate transgenic animals and extracellular flux analysis for comprehensive metabolic monitoring.

Our research areas include:

  • mitochondrial metabolism
  • insulin resistance
  • beta-cell dysfunction
  • epigenetic programming
  • foetal metabolic programming
  • maternal nutrition
  • hypertension
  • omega-3 fatty acids
  • muscle metabolism
  • musculoskeletal congenital abnormalities
  • extracellular matrix remodelling
  • oxidative stress
  • mood disorder/metabolic interactions.

Diabetes and shoulder disease

Professor Richard Page is examining new and novel molecular and pathological factors that influence frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis). His research aims to attempt better staging and therefore management of the disease.
