The principal investigators for this project are Dr Linda Komesaroff, Deakin University; Professor Merv Hyde, Griffith University; and Professor Mirko Bagaric, Deakin University. The project has been funded by the Australian Research Council with support from our Industry partner, Deaf Children Australia - a national organisation that provides information, support services and educational resources to deaf children and their families. The project is supported by a National Reference Group which includes representatives from state education departments, parent organisations, other research centres, cochlear implant programs, and deaf people.
This project investigates the anticipated benefits and achieved outcomes of children and young people with cochlear implants. The study will generate rich data and further knowledge about the outcomes of cochlear implantation for deaf individuals, their families, and the educational and community organizations that may support them. In particular, the study focuses on the personal, social, and educational outcomes of cochlear implantation, studying a broad range of measures that include language and communication, educational achievement, social identity and psychological well-being.
This research project is now completed.
