Biography

Biography

Since I completed my Masters Degree on Architecure on 1992, I have combined my activity as a practitioner with different academic positions on various Spanish universities.

On 1993 I started up my own office (Estudio Fullaondo at first and In-Fact Architecture S.L.P. since 2004). Since then we have developed all kind of projects, from urban design to furniture construction. As you may see in our curriculum we have worked for Public Administration and for Private Clients all around the Spanish territory; we have built houses, offices, public buildings, sports equipment, churches, urban spaces, master plans, infrastructures, etc. with the only common denominator of trying to approach each project as a new research area.

Besides my personal research and the publication of it’s results on various academic formats, during a three year period (2007-2010) I was commissioned to develop and manage the Architectural and Design Section of a generalist newspaper (soitu.es). I selected a small group of contributors and, during those three years, we were expected to elaborate a nearly daily architectural critic on the most various issues. I personally wrote more than eighty articles on the current situation of the architectural national and international scene.

I have been a part of multiple groups, and every time I have been in charge of any project or research, my first decision has always been choosing the best team (normally multidisciplinary) for the task. Luckily this is quite usual nowadays at University, but it is no so frequent in professional work. To avoid this problem, on 2002 I created an open group called FHE, composed by people for very different fields (architects, artists, engineers, advertising creative’s, writers, etc.) who collaborated with a non-specific aim, but just to learn from each other and to avoid the narrowness of our individual points of view.

Biography summary

In 1992 I created Estudio Fullaondo, an Architectural Office dedicated to professional work and design research. In 2004, this structure grew and generated IN-FACT Architecture S.L.P., a medium scale office in which all architects combine their professional, educational and research activities. During nearly 20 years of career I have designed, directed and constructed several projects of all scales and uses, from Master Planning to Interior Design, from Cultural Equipment to Housing. Our office has developed over 120 professional projects and directed construction of more than 75 buildings, urbanism plans and landscape actions.

Expertise summary

My personal fields of research are currently related to the topics stated in my PhD. Starting from the definition of abductive reasoning described by Charles Sanders Peirce, my research deals with possibility of translating the concept of Industrial Patents to Architectural Language. My Design Unit in UCJC University of Madrid has concentrated it???s research activity for the last three years in developing several Architectural Patents as a response to the most diverse urban and building problems. The general aim of the whole Unit was to precisely re-define the role Architecture and Architects can play in our complex and changing contemporary society. Last years we selected a very local but perhaps paradigmatic problem Spanish architects have had to face in this precise historical moment: the undeniable existence of a huge amount of built environment, developed during last decades, that due to most various reasons, has not had the opportunity to contain hardly any people, activity or life as they were supposed to do when they where designed. I called this research, Re-loading m3, and lifeless built environments used as case-study situations, Architectural-Zombies. Our goals are to define new concepts such as Zombie-fication Rate, an objective measurement of the defining parameters of a particular built environment which may establish it???s proximity to a zombie like state; and to develop a catalogue of Architectural Strategies capable to stop and reverse this degenerative process.
