Pathways to Deakin

If you don’t receive the ATAR you want, don’t panic – there are many options available.

Listing alternative pathways to Deakin in your VTAC preference is a great way to still achieve your goals.

Consider the following pathways into Deakin:

Same course, different campuses

One of the great things about Deakin is that we have four Campuses. Many of our courses are offered at more than one Campus and the ATAR required for each Campus often differs. The same high quality degree is delivered at all of our Campuses.

TAFE pathways

Upon completion of a TAFE course, you can apply to Deakin through VTAC and you may receive credit for your TAFE qualification if it is in a similar field to the Deakin course you want to do. In most cases, this will reduce the number of units and/or time required to complete your Deakin qualification. Plus, upon graduation you’ll have not one, but two qualifications.

Deakin has three partner TAFEs: Box Hill Institute; South West TAFE and Gordon Institute, however all TAFE qualifications are considered for application to Deakin.

Single unit study (non-award)

You may wish to undertake a single unit of study at Deakin (without being enrolled or accepted into a course). These units are subject to fees and do not lead to a degree, but may be credited towards a degree if you gain entry to a course at a later stage. To apply for single unit study, you need to apply via the Deakin Course and Scholarship Applicant Portal.

Student Profile

Emily Davey made some smart choices on her way to a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Marketing and Interactive Marketing) but she did feel a lot of pressure about making the right decision when she finished Year 12.

'At the time I wasn't too sure what area of study I wanted to pursue at University so I decided I wanted to do a TAFE course. I always knew that once I completed my TAFE course I would have the opportunity to continue onto University to obtain a higher qualification.'

For Emily, the Change of Preference (COP) period gave her a lot of flexibility. 'I rushed my decision when I first made my preferences so the change of preference period gave me time to really decide exactly what I wanted. The preferences I first put down were a reflection of what was 'expected' of me but not what I actually wanted.'
