Statement from Council in support of Indian students

The following statement was approved by the Council of Deakin University on 11 June, 2009:

The Council of Deakin University deplores the incidents of violence directed against Indian students that have recently been reported in the Australian and Indian media.

Council members have received a briefing from the Vice-Chancellor regarding the many steps that the University takes to address the issue of personal safety.

We support the actions taken by the University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International). We affirm Deakin University's commitment to providing every one of Deakin's students with a secure and supportive environment in which they can enjoy their time at the University and, in the case of international students, enjoy their time in Australia.

Deakin University greatly values its friendships and partnerships with India; they are enduring ones and for this reason we are confident that they will not be damaged by senseless and mindless acts of violence.
