The Graduate Certificate of Higher Education Learning and Teaching is designed to meet the requirements for credentialing tertiary teaching for academic staff. Such qualifications are becoming increasingly valued across the higher education sector, both in Australia and internationally.
The course is suitable for all academics teaching undergraduate or postgraduate students, in research supervision, and in the leadership or management of higher education. It caters for graduate students, tertiary teachers, adult educators, and professional staff engaged in supporting teaching and learning programs or delivering professional development programs.
The course is designed to develop your understanding of issues, research findings, and knowledge related to a range of tertiary teaching and learning contexts. Relevant policies, procedures and practices will be used to further your knowledge of quality teaching and learning as well as approaches and strategies to curriculum design, assessment, and the scholarship and leadership of teaching.
Fees and charges
Equivalent Full Time Student Load (EFTSL)
EFTSL is the standard annual full time load. Eight credit points is the standard full time load for one year of study. If you are studying a graduate certificate of 4 credit points, your total course EFTSL is 0.5.
Commonwealth supported place (CSP)
A Commonwealth supported place is one for which the university receives some government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute only part of the cost of their course. To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place you must be an Australian citizen, or a New Zealand citizen or holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your unit/s of study.
Fee paying place - Domestic (DFP)
A Fee paying place is one for which the university does not receive any government funding. As such, students enrolled in these places are required to contribute the full cost of their course.
Fee paying places are available to domestic students. Domestic students are those who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent visa.

Articulation to Masters course
The Graduate Certificate may articulate into the Master of Education
This course will be offered in Cloud (online) mode with online and distance education elements. Some face-to-face seminars will be available. Instruction will be provided through CloudDeakin, multimedia resources and recommended texts and readings.
Entry requirements - specific
Entrants to the course must have successfully completed an approved qualification at degree level in any field. Participants in this course are expected to undertake investigations into their own teaching practices and contexts, so it is highly desirable that they are concurrently engaged in tertiary teaching or in supporting teaching and learning processes.
Deakin University offers admission to postgraduate courses through a number of Admission categories. In all categories of admission, selection is based primarily on academic merit as indicated by an applicant's previous academic record.

Credit for prior learning - specific
The University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for approved prior study or informal learning. For a graduate certificate a minimum of two credit points within the course must be completed at Deakin. Applications for up to two credit points of credit transfer will be considered depending on the student’s prior qualifications and professional experience. Credit may be awarded for relevant teaching experience, evidence of teaching competence, teaching awards, publications related to teaching in higher education in refereed journals, supervision of PhD completions or completion or partial completion of equivalent qualifications.
