This includes engagement with online course materials, responses to tasks and independent study. Online engagement includes 1 x 1-hour online lecture per week (recordings provided), and six 2-hour online seminars offered fortnightly (recordings provided), so you can manage your online learning around professional experience (placement) teaching weeks.

 

Content

This unit emphasises the concurrent development of teaching capacities and theoretical understandings, drawing on contemporary knowledge about the diversity of students’ learning needs and the teaching and learning of new and traditional literacies.

It explores the stages and dimensions of (1) early reading and writing development and assessment; and (2) middle years reading and writing development and assessment. There is a focus on developing students’ learning in: oral language (including phonological and phonemic awareness and vocabulary development), phonics, fluency, comprehension, word identification strategies, cueing systems as well as spelling, grammar and punctuation knowledge.

A range of approaches to literacy teaching and programming are introduced and participants become familiar with the processes of lesson planning, reflection and assessment of learning within Victorian and national curriculum frameworks. Core materials engage students with current debates and issues in the teaching of literacy, language and literature and explore teaching strategies and resources.

Core materials and assessment tasks emphasise the importance of research informed teaching and building on the diverse types of knowledge about literacy that students bring to school from their homes and communities.
