Conversational AI platforms such as the widely accessible smart speakers (Google Home, Alexa etc.) provide novel opportunities to develop a range of playful user experiences. Artificial Intelligence is often mentioned as one of the disruptive technologies of the next decade along with Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality and there are many applications to date. However, despite the high interest in the technology there are many unanswered questions relating to the design of compelling user experiences.
The successful applicant will join a vibrant multi-disciplinary team of active researchers in Deakin’s new research facility for Creative User-based Experiences (CUBE). CUBE provides researchers with access to most recent Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, sensor-based tracking equipment and facilitates investigation into the creative use of the technology to enable humans in a world changed by technology. CUBE is the home of Deakin’s Creative Applications Network and regularly houses Creative Technology related workshops and symposia.
This PhD project aims to investigate the development of creative user experiences using conversational interfaces in combination with other emerging technology such as sensors and indoor positioning systems to facilitate engaging, natural and playful story experiences. The successful candidate will utilise a research through design approach to progress knowledge through the systematic research and development of a series of prototypes/creative works followed by subsequent user testing.
The ideal candidate has a story telling / game design background and some experience in digital media design.
