Students will be required to complete a minimum of 160 hours in conjunction with host organisation

Note:

Work experience in industry: This is a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit.

Contact Hours: Students are required to complete 160 hours of supervised placement with a host organisation prior to weekly 2-hour seminars in Trimester 1. 

Note: 160 hours of approved and supervised internship placement must be completed prior to the commencement of Trimester 1 seminars.   Placements are typically completed between the months of October and February.  Please consult the Faculty of Arts and Education Work Integrated Learning team for more information on how to source and start your internship: deakin.edu.au/artsed-wil

Note: DO NOT commence your internship until you have been granted formal approval. To gain approval undertake the following steps in the order specified:

  1. Complete the online pre-internship modules: http://www.deakin.edu.au/students/faculties/artsed/work-integrated-learning/internships/process
  2. Identify, research and then contact potential host organisations. Negotiate your tasks, goals, hours, and supervision arrangements.
  3. Apply online to have your internship approved.

Content

The unit offers students the opportunity to gain firsthand experience of public relations in the business world and to explore the practical applications of theories and case studies. It provides a framework from which students can assess their knowledge, skills and work preferences by participating in the practice of public relations. Internships assist with the networking vital to finding that first job.

Assessment

Placement Report, 4800 words, 60%

Presentation, 5 minutes, 800 words equivalent, 10%

Career Planning, 2400 words, 30%
