This unit offers studies in arts education for students with and without a background in the arts. The unit provides additional studies for students undertaking double-secondary methods in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art. Students choose to focus on one of four arts education discipline areas (Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Art).
The unit specifically aims to develop understandings of a range of methodologies, pedagogies and philosophies as a basis for professional practice. The unit prepares students to research and apply established theories to classroom practice, in particular, to interpret curriculum change. Students will develop critical and creative thinking skills, interpersonal communication and intercultural understanding as they analyse and reflect on performing and visual arts education pedagogies in the compulsory years of schooling.
Dance Education focuses on how individual and shared dance vocabularies, styles and traditions are intrinsically linked to history, society and culture. Student's critically explore and enact practical applications guided by inclusive dance education practices, influences on choreographer's choices, dance design, choreographic processes and manipulations of elements & principles for different purposes and diverse educational settings.
Drama Education focuses on the ways drama can be applied to learning across the curriculum, in other key learning areas and for general capabilities. Students explore practical drama approaches, investigate existing applied drama and theatre projects and design and implement drama activities for particular educational purposes and settings.
Music Education focuses on the European teaching methodologies of Orff, Kodály, Dalcroze and African music in a P-10 setting, making connections to music, society and culture. Students also explore composition, and musicianship, in addition to developing classroom management skills.
