A minimum of 8 credit points of study of undergraduate units including at least one of ACG103, ACG101, ACM138 or ACM132, and permission from unit chair to enrol.

Please note that study tour units may not run each year. Enrolment is always subject to a selection process and approval by the Unit Chair as places are limited. Therefore students should always identify another unit as an alternative to  a study tour  unit when planning their course or major.

Contact hours:

Total Contact hours per week: 24.   

Seminars – 8 hours per week; Field research -10 hours per week; and  Group work with Japanese students – 6 hours per week.

Delivery methods - intensive mode during tour; 2-3 meetings Campus mode following the tour to follow up assignment work.

This unit will engage with Japanese culture in a variety of different ways that will inform new work and new understandings of the research process for Visual Communication.   The following different modes of study will be conducted throughout the study trip:

  • Field trips to major locations of cultural significance to the history of art and design in Japanese culture.
  • Guest lectures by both academic and solo practitioners of Visual Communication and Animation
  • Guided studio visits to Major animation and design studios in Japan
  • Collaborative classes with students at KUAD (Kyoto University of Art and Design)
