Content

This unit introduces students to the challenges of governance in modern politics, approaching this through different theoretical approaches to democracy advocated for local, national, regional and transnational levels of politics. Governance will be considered in relation to the issues arising from the fields of (a) public policy and administration, (b) international and transnational politics and (c) comparative politics. Attention is directed to debates over the criteria of good governance to be found in theories of democracy and neoliberalism, together with the challenges posed by neoliberal ideas of the state and economy. In this way the unit also offers an introduction to democratic politics more broadly.
