Content

This unit studies contemporary short stories from around the world, focusing on how revision – of other forms of writing and other representations of the world – is central to the vision that these stories put forward. Through a study of the collections of writers such as Ali Smith, Lydia Davis and Tim O’Brien, revision will be revealed as a central methodology of creative practice. In a critical assignment, students will analyse the different ways in which revision informs the vision of the set texts. In a creative assignment, students will write a revisionary short story of their own, based on a model provided by a set text. Students will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their critical commentaries and to workshop their revisionary short stories prior to final submission.

Assessment

5 x 500-word critical commentaries (in response to 5 set texts): 2500 words in total, 50%

2000-word creative essay and 500-word critical appendix: 2500 words in total, 50%
