Content

This unit will introduce students to key ideas and approaches in writing for children. Students will select a genre in which to write a piece of creative fiction such as fantasy, the school story or romance. They will frame their understanding of contemporary genre conventions by analysing a selection of children's and young adult fiction and utilising this context in the production of their own creative output.

Identify the major conventions of a range of genres in young adult fiction. Apply knowledge of conventions of at least one genre to an analysis of range of contemporary texts for young adults. Identify conventional practices in the field of publishing for young people including those relating to collaboration publication and ethics

Demonstrate the close reading, critical analysis and production of scholarly discourses concerning genres in young adult fiction.
