Typical study commitment:

Students will spend on average 150 hours over the trimester undertaking synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning activities for this unit.

This will include 14 hours synchronous learning activities and 14 hours of guided asynchronous learning activities.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment:

Content

This unit forms part of the Critical Understandings Cluster. Caring for older people presents distinct complexities for nurses. An understanding of the normal physiological changes related to ageing and the nurse’s role in the management of common alterations is required.

The unit will include an overview of the ageing population from a local and global perspective and explore the nurse’s critical role in the provision of person-centred care, including supportive end-of-life care.

Opportunities will be provided for students to develop knowledge regarding the role and responsibilities of the nurse in managing symptoms, function, and risk, and in identifying evidence-based interventions to promote optimal wellness, or end-of-life support for the older person.
