Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - online unit enrolment:

Theoretical component 10-13 hours per week - a combination online seminars (3 hours) and self-guided modules (7-10 hours). Students are also required to complete a minimum of 24 hours a week in specialty clinical practice in their employing hospital.

In-person attendance requirements:

Online independent and collaborative learning activities including up to 10 synchronous online seminar days that are recorded and made available to students on demand.

Content

This unit focuses on further developing the speciality knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required for perianaesthesia nursing practice. There is a focus on the student’s ability to manage complex and special populations and to identify risk and inform decisions that deliver safe, high quality nursing care and promote optimal patient outcomes.

This unit covers the role of specialist nurse in managing patients across the life cycle undergoing anaesthesia in relation to: the concepts and principles of anaesthetic techniques and postoperative care in special populations; assessment and management of anaesthetic specialties including complex medical conditions and emergency presentations; concepts and principles of advanced monitoring; and postoperative care following complex and specialty surgery.
