Content

This unit will provide students with an overview of the metabolic responses to exercise and their regulation. Specific topics to be covered include: an overview of skeletal muscle energy metabolism; hormonal regulation of metabolism; metabolism during high-intensity exercise; regulation and interaction of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism during exercise; metabolic bases of fatigue; metabolic adaptations in response to exercise training and environmental challenges such as heat; cellular and molecular regulation of metabolism.

ULO These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can: Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
ULO1

Identify and describe the key areas of muscle metabolism and explain the regulation and integration of metabolic processes in response to exercise.

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities

ULO2

Collaboratively apply knowledge of muscle metabolism, and the regulation and integration of metabolic responses to exercise to solve practical and theoretical problems.

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities
GLO2: Communication
GLO4: Critical thinking
GLO5: Problem solving
GLO7: Teamwork

ULO3

Accurately collect and interpret practical measurement data and apply that knowledge along with critical evaluation of the scientific literature to explain the physiological and metabolic responses to exercise.

GLO1: Discipline-specific knowledge and capabilities
