Prerequisite:

For students who commenced their course in or after 2018 or enrolled in the new course structure H343 (Version 4) or D394 (Version 2) or D333:

Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 175 hours over the teaching period undertaking the practicum (140 hours), scheduled learning activities (10 hours) and assessment activities (25 hours) for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment:

On campus:
1 x 1 hour on-campus lecture per week in weeks 1 - 5
1 x 1 hour online seminar in week 6
Self-directed learning through 1 x 1 hour topic modules (hosted online)

Off-site: A minimum of 140 hours of professional (placement) experience with an organisation of your choosing, to undertake activities within the Accredited Exercise Scientist scope of practice.

Note:

If you are undertaking more than one unit which has a placement component, please note that the placement organisations have to be different for different placement units. For example, if you are undertaking HSE312 and HSE321 Sport Coaching and Development Practicum, you will need to find two different organisations to undertake the two placements.

Note for all students enrolling into this unit:

You must complete your placement hours within your trimester of enrolment of the placement unit unless otherwise stated directly by the Unit Chair. If you are not able to complete the placement by the end your trimester of enrolment in the placement unit, please email the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Professional Placement Office at ens-placements@deakin.edu.au as soon as possible.

Note for students applying for Recognition of prior learning (RPL) in this unit:

Students may apply for RPL for HSE312 if they have completed previous study that they believe is directly comparable to HSE312’s specific content and learning outcomes AND completed a relevant professional placement experience. If you wish to apply for RPL for both the coursework AND placement components of HSE312, please apply via the pathway outlined on this webpage: https://www.deakin.edu.au/study/how-to-apply/recognition-of-prior-learning and supply supporting documents as described below.

Students may also apply for an exemption for either the coursework OR placement component of HSE312 based on previous study or relevant professional placement experience. If you wish to apply for an exemption, please apply to the unit team directly: hse312@deakin.edu.au. Please see below for details on the supporting documentation required in this instance:

Coursework component:

  • Official transcripts (for either complete or incomplete qualifications)
  • Unit outlines including assessment requirements and unit weighting
  • Unit mapping linking completed unit/s to HSE312
  • Key to results including grades and their meaning
  • Written statement relating your previous learning to the learning outcomes in HSE312. Additional program information such as weekly topics, assessments and readings are beneficial.

Placement component:

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science is accredited with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA). Therefore, RPL will only be considered for the placement component of HSE312 if students are able to provide all of the following:

  1. a completed Exercise Science Practicum Logbook including 140 hours relevant to exercise science (signed by an appropriately qualified supervisor) AND a Host Supervisor Report demonstrating student capabilities whilst on placement (the unit team can supply a template for this);
    OR
    (2) Other documentation tools developed by the education provider with whom you were enrolled during practicum that captured evidence of 140 hours relevant to exercise science AND a Host Supervisor Report demonstrating student capabilities whilst on placement (the unit team can supply a template for this).

These documents must be provided for review by the unit team who will assess them against ESSA standards. If the application does not meet these evidence requirements either initially or through consultation with the Unit Chair then RPL will not be granted. Content

This unit will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a formalised fieldwork experience of a minimum of 140 hours in an exercise and sport organisational setting. Each student is responsible for selecting and negotiating an appropriate work experience. In addition to the practicum experience, students will engage with, and develop, their career education and employability through a focus on job application processes and skills. All field experiences, classes, seminars, unit content and assessment tasks are intended to provide students with opportunities to develop skills and knowledge in areas of exercise and sport science that will enhance their professional development and graduate employability.
