This unit introduces students to economic evaluation and assumes no prior knowledge (although the study of Health Economics 1 would be advantageous). The unit will explore the basic concepts, methods and applications of economic evaluation in the healthcare sector. The unit will cover the following topics: an introduction to economic evaluation (what it is; what it isn’t; types of economic evaluation; how it differs from other forms of evaluation); steps in conducting an economic study; strengths and limitations of economic evaluation; an introduction to study design; measurement  of costs; measurement of outcomes and issues around quality of evidence.


Essay (2000 words) 40%, in-trimester exercises (including tutorial participation) 20%, examination (2 hours) 40%
