Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 300 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment:

7 weeks of teaching consisting of seminars, presentations, professional experience (placement) and time for assessment task completion. Seminars, and assessment tasks may take place outside of Deakin University teaching periods.

Note:

Students must complete all pre-requisite AND co-requisite units, or their hurdle requirements, by the first date of HSN758 teaching block, to be able to undertake this unit.

You must complete your placement hours within your semester of enrolment of the placement unit, unless otherwise stated directly by the Unit Chair. This unit has mandatory on campus attendance requirements, therefore students must be in Australia when enrolled in this unit.

Department of Human Services policy - Police Record Check and Working With Children Check

In accordance with Department of Human Services policy, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to placements in each calendar year of their course.

In accordance with the Department of Justice 2007, Working with Children Act 2005, amended 2017, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of placement will not be able to undertake placement and this will impede progress in the course.

Students may also be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

This unit will explore a range of issues including ethical considerations in professional practice; business skills and entrepreneurship in dietetics; the importance and value of successful interprofessional collaboration; advocacy, leadership and professionalism; cultural diversity and responsiveness in dietetic practice; and career development activities as students prepare to enter the dietetic workforce. A one week elective placement gives students the opportunity to organise their own placement in an area of career interest within dietetics.

Travel commitment

Because of the need for professional practice at external sites, all students undertaking the course should be aware of the required need for travel to placement sites. The requirement to travel is very real and travel time up to 2 hours each way is considered normal. It is also likely that you will have to attend at least one rural placement during the course.

The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.

Hurdle requirement

Evidence of meeting Dietitian Australia's competency based standards by achieving a pass mark or higher in Assessment task 2.
