| Typical study commitment: | Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit. This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site. |
| Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment: | Lectures (1 hour) will be held on campus week 1 – 11, attendance is strongly recommended. Seminars (1 hour) will be held on campus weeks 1 - 6, attendance is strongly recommended. Please note that lectures and seminars will be recorded however they are not video recorded. Additionally, the seminars often involve small group work so the audio recordings may not be easily understood. Practical experiences (clinical skills) (2 hours) will be run on campus week 7 - 11. You must attend during your allocated sessions as these hours are part of the minimum 1000 hours of practical experience required to complete the occupational therapy course. Practice education experiences (OT site visits) will run weeks 7-11 on an alternative day to your on campus practical experience. These may be virtual or in-person (at the agency or on campus). The schedule for these experiences will be provided on the unite site and you will be given an opportunity to sign up to these site visits from the middle of the trimester. Please check unit site regularly for details on this process. Practical experiences (OT site visits) are part of the minimum 1000 hours of practical experience required to complete the occupational therapy course. Both the on campus Practical experiences (clinical skills) and the Practice education experiences (OT site visits) have a 90% attendance requirement. There are three practical examinations. One will be held online and two on campus. You will need to ensure that you are available for all practical exam dates as listed in the assessment information on the unit site |
Note:Department of Human Services policy - Police Record Check and Working With Children Check In accordance with Department of Human Services policy, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to clinical placements in each calendar year of their course. In accordance with the Department of Justice 2007, Working with Children Act 2005, amended 2017, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of clinical placement will not be able to undertake clinical placement and this will impede progress in the course. Students may also be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation. | |
Content
This level 1 unit, which comprises both academic and fieldwork streams, introduces students to occupational science and therapy. It examines the current and potential roles occupational science and therapy play in individual and population health settings. Students are encouraged to draw on personal and fieldwork experiences as a first step to understanding themselves as occupational beings and to developing appropriate learning objectives. Topics include conducting initial interviews, introduction to group work and the fundamentals of occupational performance assessments. The historical and modern perspectives of the profession will be examined in relation to psychological, sociological, anthropological and biomedical concepts. A range of practice contexts will be explored through both curriculum and fieldwork. Students will solve occupation-based case scenarios through seminars, experiential learning, practice education preparation and experience in the field. Through practice education students will participate in site visits and observation of occupational therapy programs.

- Must complete all practice education requirements (90% placement attendance).
