Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment:

Stream 1 (Academic): 1 x 1 hour online lecture plus 1 x 2 hour on-campus seminar per week
Stream 2 (Professional experience (placement)): 1 day per week or equivalent

Note:

Department of Human Services policy - Police Record Check and Working With Children Check

In accordance with Department of Human Services policy, all students are required to undertake a National Police Record Check prior to clinical placements in each calendar year of their course.

In accordance with the Department of Justice 2007, Working with Children Act 2005, amended 2017, all students are required to undertake a Working with Children Check at the commencement of their course. Students who fail to obtain a Police Record Check and a Working with Children Check prior to the commencement of clinical placement will not be able to undertake clinical placement and this will impede progress in the course.

Students may also be required to declare their immunisation status to satisfy the requirements of health organisations where they will be undertaking their clinical learning experience. A health organisation may refuse to accept a student for placement if the student’s immunisation status is not satisfactory to the health organisation.

Content

This unit is designed to develop contemporary occupational therapy practice skills, according to professional competencies that underpin the profession. It covers approaches to and methods of identifying people's needs, choices, capacities and preferences within a person-centred approach leading to the collaborative identification of occupational therapy goals.

This unit focuses on gathering information about occupational performance and the influence of environments. Topics covered include the purpose of occupational therapy assessment; narrative storytelling as a way of information gathering; reflective practice; collaborative goal-setting; selection, critique and use of assessment tools; and assessing and modifying environments to enhance occupational performance. Teaching methods will include online weekly modules, seminars, scenario-based learning, small group discussions and practice education.

Failure of a practice education component in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy will normally lead to failure of the unit and may lead to exclusion from the course.

The assessment due weeks provided may change. The Unit Chair will clarify the exact assessment requirements, including the due date, at the start of the teaching period.

Hurdle requirement

  • Must complete all placement requirements (SPEF-R2 and 90% placement attendance).
  • Must pass Assessment Task 4.
