Many businesses are adopting a service-oriented approach to the governance of information technology (IT) where emerging technologies and service structures are efficiently leveraged. Such an approach exploits emerging technologies such as cloud and mobile technologies and new service structures such as outsourcing to provide flexible, well-defined, on demand, high quality information system (IS) services to key stakeholders such as employees, consumers and enterprises. An IS service is a set of related functions provided by information systems to support business areas and business processes. IS services are organised and managed by an IS service management framework. This unit explores the role and nature of IS services. It then reviews popular service-oriented frameworks and models such as internal, outsourced and hybrid IS services. It also explores emerging technologies and tools for providing IS services such as mobile technologies and cloud computing. The unit adopts a strategic outlook and considers which model of IS services best supports the strategic context of an organisation. It also explores the social, organisational and technological issues which affect IS services performance. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to review IS services in a real life organisation in order to understand the application of IS service management theory to modern business settings.
Assignment (group of up to 3-4, 5000 words) 50%, examination 2 hours 50%
