Content
This unit aims to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the Australian legal system and grounding in certain areas of law relevant to the work of police officers. The unit will also seek to engender an appreciation of the importance of civil rights and of the difficulties associated with balancing those rights and the demands of law enforcement and the prevention of crime. The syllabus includes the structure of the Australian legal system; law making and enforcement in Australia, statutory interpretation; civil rights; introduction to the law of torts; and the civil liability of police officers.Assessment
