Typical study commitment: | Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit. This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site. |
Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment: | 2 x 1 hour lectures per week, 3 x 3 hour practical experience (laboratory) per trimester (week 2, 4 and 7), 1 x full-day practical experience (field trip) per trimester (week 8), 1 x 3 hour seminar per trimester (week 10). Practical experience (laboratory) and practical experience (field trip) will be conducted from the Deakin University Queenscliff Marine Science Centre. |
Content
SLE134 is designed to introduce students to concepts, gears, and challenges in fisheries and fisheries management. Learning and assessment activities in this unit will provide students with the opportunity to learn about different aspects of fish and fisheries and gain hands on experience to familiarize themselves with fish, gears, and fishing. Students will learn directly from experts in the field and work independently and collaboratively through various assessments to better understand the ecological and socio-economic difficulties in managing fisheries.
