Typical study commitment:

Students will on average spend 150 hours over the teaching period undertaking the teaching, learning and assessment activities for this unit.

This will include educator guided online learning activities within the unit site.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - on-campus unit enrolment:

3 x 1 hour lectures per week, 1 x 1 hour seminar per week, 5 x 3 hour practical experience (laboratory) per trimester.

Educator-facilitated (scheduled) learning activities - online unit enrolment:

Trimester 3 (Intensive): Online independent and collaborative learning including 33 x 1 hour online lectures over approximately 8 teaching weeks (3-5 online contact hours per week); 11 x 1 hour online seminars and 5 x 3 hour practical experience (laboratory) per trimester.

Practical experience (laboratory) will be held on campus at Burwood (Melbourne) and Waurn Ponds (Geelong) on the scheduled days during the intensive week (typically week 5).

Content

SLE155 builds on the student’s previous chemistry knowledge about atoms, molecules, properties, reactions, measurement and acidity. Students will extend their knowledge to more advanced chemical naming, structures, and bonding. They will be introduced to additional topics such as, chemical equilibria, solution chemistry, simple organic compounds and chirality.

This unit will lead to further studies in biochemistry, chemistry, and related areas like food and nutrition, molecular biology and science education. This unit can also be taken as an elective unit for students who want a broader knowledge of chemistry to enhance their degree.

ULO These are the Learning Outcomes (ULO) for this unit. At the completion of this unit, successful students can: Deakin Graduate Learning Outcomes
