Content
This unit provides an understanding of the dynamics of cities – the physical, economic, social and political forces the combine to shape all cities, yet give a distinctive character to each. It incorporates geographic and economic theories that explain the form, distribution and process of urban change. Particular attention is given to understanding property economics, providing familiarity with decision-making surrounding investments that change the form or function of parts of a city. It also addresses the inter-relationship between transport (public and private) and land use upon cities, and the consequences and challenges that can result. The influence of culture, wealth distribution and civic identity upon the livability of a city is addressed, along with issues relating to governance, distribution of power and decision-making.
