Content

Students will be able to understand the equipment and fitout required for building system environments with respect to acoustics, HVAC, water, fire, transportation and lighting through hand calculations and simulation tools. They will engage in a case study commercial building to examine the acoustic requirements, principles and practical application.  Students will engage in discussion of aural environments and acoustic design of rooms in regards to reverberation times, background noise and speech intelligibility.  They will be able to select suitable materials, understand noise problems and sound transmission through structures.  The unit will review and challenge students to recognise the appropriate selection of environmental HVAC, water, fire and transportation systems for sizing and location within a building. Students will analyse building envelope materials and assemblies to respond to climatic conditions in order to reduce capital equipment, energy costs and CO2 emissions.  They will select from various lighting types an appropriate solution for the function required.  The unit will introduce the organizational methods of presenting knowledge on the above mentioned services in its entirety.
