Peer Mentor Programs

The Faculty of Business and Law Student Mentor Programs are designed to support new students with their social and academic transition to Deakin in their first trimester. There are separate programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The programs endeavour to create a responsive and supportive learning community where new students have an immediate link to senior students by working in a group of three to four and meeting on a weekly basis for the first six weeks after the course commences.

Student mentors generously share valuable experiences on study approaches and strategies, time management, utilising University resources, networking opportunities etc. It also provides opportunities for students to improve key employability skills like communication, time management, relationship building, team work and leadership, with Certificate of Recognition granted to acknowledge the personal development of student mentors.

Drop-In Stations

Faculty of Business and Law Student Drop-in Stations (DIS) are staffed by senior student mentors in the Student Mentor Program. There are two DIS, which open daily for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Two newsletters have also been developed by DIS mentors (‘DIS Week’ for undergraduate students and ‘Your Voice’ for postgraduate students).

DIS student mentors are knowledgeable students who can share their experiences on how they planned for their course and specialisations, approached specific unit and assignments, prepared for exams, utilised University resources and services, discuss cultural differences etc. There is no appointment necessary to meet the DIS student mentors.

There are computer facilities in the DIS where the mentors can also show you how to use DSO, STAR, StudentConnect and webmail effectively. It is also a good place to explore the most up-to-date information on Campus activities to get involved in.
