Work permits for dependants

To work in Australia students and their dependants must apply for permission to work. Dependants of students who are themselves studying can apply on the same form. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) encourages students to apply online as it is quicker. Please note however that this process requires a credit card and confirmation from Deakin International and the dependant's educational institution of the commencement of their studies.

Students may also apply in person at DIAC. If students choose to do so, they should complete Form 157P, 'Application for a student visa with permission to work', which can be obtained from Deakin International or from DIAC. (Please ensure that the section under 'Education Provider details' on the form has been completed by one of the staff at Deakin International.)

Maximum number of work hours dependent family members are entitled to

Depending on the course students are enrolled in, their spouse/dependants are entitled either to work a maximum of 20 hours per week or unlimited hours.

At present, DIAC regulations state that dependants of international students can only work a maximum of 20 hours per week throughout the year, while dependants of the following students can work unlimited hours once the student has started their main course:

  • students enrolled in Masters by coursework (visa 573)
  • students enrolled in Masters by research or Doctoral degree (visa 574)
  • students sponsored by AusAID or Defence (visa 576).

More information on work rights can be found on the DIAC website.
