Referencing and plagiarism

In Australian academic culture, ownership of ideas is very important. You should therefore always cite where you have obtained an idea, particularly when you are writing assignments.

Plagiarism or cheating occurs when a student passes off someone else's work as his or her own, or copies work without acknowledging its authorship. This is an act of academic misconduct and has severe penalties. In order not to plagiarise, writers must correctly reference their work. It is every student's responsibility to understand the faculty statement on plagiarism, as well as to correctly reference their work.

If you are having difficulty with referencing, first speak to your tutor or lecturer. You may also find the Academic Skills Resource Room a good source of information.

The Division of Student Life provides one hour workshops each semester designed to assist students with referencing.
