Computer availability on campus

There are many ways to access Deakin's IT services on campus. These include computer labs, kiosk workstations, the internet cafes on the Melbourne Campus at Burwood, using your own computer in student residences and your own wireless laptop in many locations on each campus.

Computer labs

There are general access and bookable computer labs on each campus. Workstations in these labs contain a range of standard and specialist software.There are rules governing the use of computer labs.

You can check the timetable at any time to see if a bookable lab is free for general use, or check the facilities and opening times for any lab. Some labs require a swipe card for after hours access.

Kiosks

Special workstations with limited access are placed at various locations around the University. These are ideal for accessing Deakin IT services on the go as you don't need to log in.

Wireless access

Wireless access is available in many locations on all campuses. See the relevant help sheet or user guide for your operating system for detailed information relating to the set up of your laptop to use Deakin's wireless service.

Assistive technology labs

The assistive technology labs are designed to provide equitable access to computing facilities for students with disabilities. These labs are located in the library on each campus. The workstations have similar software to those in the general computing labs, with the addition of some specialist software, and take advantage of some of the accessibility features of the Windows XP operating system.

The assistive technology software includes:

• JAWS (text to speech)
• Dragon Naturally Speaking (speech to text)
• Windows screen magnifier (screen magnifier)
• ZoomText (screen magnifier, text to speech)
• OpenBook (scanning OCR )
• Wynn (text to speech, browser, scanning, OCR)

Lecture theatres

All lecture theatres are equipped with computer facilities for the presenter to use.  These workstations are configured with the standard computer lab software.
